An Upper Palaeolithic Proto-writing System and Phenological Calendar

چکیده
In at least 400 European caves such as Lascaux, Chauvet and Altamira, Upper Palaeolithic Homo sapiens groups drew, painted engraved non-figurative signs from ~42,000 bp figurative images (notably animals) 37,000 . Since their discovery ~150 years ago, the purpose or meaning of has eluded researchers. Despite this, specialists assume that they were notational in some way. Using a database spanning Palaeolithic, we suggest how three most frequently occurring signs—the line < | > , dot <•>, <Y>—functioned units communication. We demonstrate when found close association with animals <•> constitute numbers denoting months, form constituent parts local phenological/meteorological calendar beginning spring recording time this point lunar months. also <Y> sign, one art, <To Give Birth>. The position within sequence marks denotes month parturition, an ordinal representation number contrast to cardinal used tallies. Our data indicate system associating information was record convey seasonal behavioural about specific prey taxa geographical regions concern. way which pairing animal subjects constituted complete unit meaning—a combined its subject—that provides us insight into what set means. It gives our first reading communication, known writing history

An Upper Palaeolithic engraved human bone associated with ritualistic cannibalism
Cut-marked and broken human bones are a recurrent feature of Magdalenian (~17-12,000 years BP, uncalibrated dates) European sites. Human remains at Gough's Cave (UK) have been modified as part of a Magdalenian mortuary ritual that combined the intensive processing of entire corpses to extract edible tissues and the modification of skulls to produce skull-cups. A human radius from Gough's Cave s...
متن کاملSexual dimorphism in Upper Palaeolithic hand stencils
Sexual roles in deep prehistory are among the most intriguing puzzles still to solve. Here the author shows how men and women can be distinguished by scientific measurement in the prints and stencils of the human hand that occur widely in Upper Palaeolithic art. Six hand stencils from four French caves are attributed to four adult females, an adult male, and a sub-adult male. Here we take a ste...
متن کاملAn Automatic Distributed Calendar and Appointment System
We give a short overview of a prototype version of a fully distributed calendar and appointment system implemented on a network of workstations. We describe the software architecture, the appointment scheduling strategies and heuristics, the distributed implementation language, and the graphical user interface. The motivations for the realization of the system within a distributed systems resea...
متن کاملUpper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Buckinghamshire 38,000-4000 Bc
Archaeological investigations in Buckinghamshire have to date had little impact nationally on understanding of the Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic. Such evidence as there is comes principally from sites associated with watercourses. There has been one preliminary investigation of a late Upper Palaeolithic site and only a few relatively small-scale investigations on sites of Mesolithic date. No...
متن کاملSpecialized Early Upper Palaeolithic Hunters in Southwestern France?
Paul Mellars has long used cave and rockshelter ungulate faunal assemblages from southwestern France to argue that the early Upper Palaeolithic people of this region focused their hunting on reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and that such specialized hunting distinguishes the Upper from the Middle Palaeolithic in at least this region. We examine this argument quantitatively, using a sample of 133 M...
